2 Gbps is TWN’s fastest residential fiber internet plan. While a single device does not require 2 Gbps, it’s perfect for spreading out over multiple devices. Ideal for the multi-device family, 2 Gbps is great for powering several devices that each need high-capacity bandwidth to run at optimum speeds at the same time.
The number of devices each household uses continues to grow. It’s not uncommon for a family of four to have over 30 connected devices. From laptops, cell phones, and streaming TVs to appliances, security systems, gaming devices, and thermostats, each device requires speed and bandwidth. TWN’s 2G fiber plan keeps all these devices connected and running smoothly at the same time. It’s future-proof, so as your household uses more devices over time, your internet will be able to keep up!
How can you make sure you’re getting your full 2 Gbps? Run a speed test! Before you can run a speed test, it’s important to know the two different types of tests that exist:
- Speed to the home – This measures the speed from TWN’s servers to the router in your home. Because this test is less affected by outside factors, it is the most accurate and should be the closest to your plan’s max speed. This is best tested using the TWN Control Hub app and the TWN provided router.
- Speed to the device – This measures the speed to your device. This speed test is affected by various factors, which means your results may not be as close to your plan’s max speed if it is not tested while connected to the router. Factors that may affect this test if testing over Wi-Fi include Wi-Fi interference, range from the router, the number of devices in use, device capabilities and technology, and software updates or background activities.
Now let’s look at the different ways you can run a speed test!
Testing Speed to the Home:
- The most accurate way to test is using the TWN Control Hub app and the TWN provided router.
- First, download the TWN Control Hub app from the Apple Store or Google Play. Next, you’ll want to run an Ookla- based performance test from within the app.
- Select “My Network” from the main dashboard, select “Bandwidth Test” in the settings section, and then hit the “Run Test” button. Your download speed results should show 2 Gbps if on the 2 Gbps plan.
- A TWN field tech can also run a speed test from the Calix Support cloud to confirm your results.
Testing Speed to the Device:
If you’re connected to Wi-Fi and run a speed test, the results may be less than 2 Gbps. This is because you are testing speed to the device, not speed to the home.
When you test your speed to the device on our 2G plan, it will likely read closer to 1 Gbps, depending on the capabilities of each device.. There are two ports on your router. For greater accuracy, select two devices to test and hardwire into the router. Then, run a speed test simultaneously on both devices. With many devices connected to your internet, your bandwidth is being split between the devices you have in use. For example, 1 Gbps may be going to your laptop, 500 Mbps may be going to your TV, 200 Mbps may be going to your phone, etc.
How do you test speed to the device?
- Choose a reliable speed test tool – We recommend Ookla (www.speedtest.net/).
- Close unnecessary applications and devices – Make sure no one else is using the internet during the test. Pause downloads and updates, close bandwidth-heavy applications, and ensure no devices are streaming. Make sure you’ve also deactivated or removed any other devices from your connection, including all other phones, laptops, or tablets that you aren’t using to perform the test.
- Choose two or three devices to test – Close and disconnect all other unnecessary devices from Wi-Fi. Run a speed test from each device. Add results. This should be close to or at 2 Gbps. If you run multiple tests, allow for a brief pause in between each test.
- For the most precise results, you can also connect your device directly to your router using an Ethernet cable. It’s a good idea to be close to the router to reduce signal loss. Your router must support a 2G (or higher) capable WAN ethernet port and the device being plugged into the router must have the capability to support the processing of 2G data.
- Plug your device (laptop, phone, tablet, etc.) directly into your router using the ethernet cable, then run Ookla speed test by visiting www.speedtest.net/. Results should be close to or at 2 Gbps.
